Chapter
6
âIsnât it great?â Andy asked, waving his arm like a game-show host over the breathtaking scenery in front of them.
âYeah. And just think, it only took us nine hundred steps to climb up here,â Carter told him, only half kidding. When sheâd suggested meeting at the lighthouse, she didnât think theyâd actually climb it. But Andy had insisted, saying it was the best view of Costa Luna you could find.
Stop thinking of it as a date, Carter cautioned herself. Think of it as hanging out with a new friend.
A new cute friend.
Andy held up the informational brochure theyâd received when they entered the old lighthouse. âTwo hundred fifty-five steps to be exact,â he said. âBut face it, where else do you get the chance to see migrating whales?â
Andy wasnât as cute as Carter had remembered himâhe was cuter. Today he had on a pair of navy draw-cord shorts, a green T-shirt, and brown leather treads. His brown curls poked out from under a faded Red Sox baseball cap.
He had been right on time, which Carter liked. Keeping a girl waiting was not cool.
Neither is telling somebody youâre a member of a royal family when you arenât, Carter thought for the zillionth time. To be fair, she hadnât technically told that whopper of a lieâNatalie was the guilty party. But I didnât do anything to correct it, she reminded herself. Instead, I went along with it.
Carter sighed inwardly. She would have to fess up to the truth. But until he brought it up . . . not yet.
She pulled out her camera and snapped a few pictures.
âWould you like one of you two together?â a woman wearing rhinestone sunglasses asked.
âOh. Uh, sure,â Carter said, handing the woman her camera. Wait. She had to try to sound at least a little royal. She cleared her throat. âI mean, yes. Thatâs so very kind of you.â
Andy gave her a funny look before they turned and smiled for the picture. Did he suspect she was lying? Her stomach churned nervously. Sheâd have to do a better job of acting like a princess.
âYou look so familiar,â the woman told Andy, tapping her chin with her finger. She gave Carter her camera. âAre you a student at Karate Kicks, by any chance?â
Andy shook his head and began to walk over to the stairwell. âNope, not me.â
âThank you,â Carter called out to the woman. She caught up with Andy. He seemed in a hurry to leave.
âI want to show you my Costa Luna,â he told her as they began their descent down the creaky circular staircase. âThe real one most tourists never see.â
Carter took a careful step. Falling down the stairs would definitely not be royal. âThat sounds . . . lovely.â
If someone had told Carter three days ago that sheâd be riding on the back of a sleek black Vespa scooter, her arms around a cute boy, her hair blowing in the Costa Lunan breeze, sheâd have said they were crazy.
Well, maybe not the hair-blowing-inthe-breeze part.
