Chapter

6

“Isn’t it great?” Andy asked, waving his arm like a game-show host over the breathtaking scenery in front of them.

“Yeah. And just think, it only took us nine hundred steps to climb up here,” Carter told him, only half kidding. When she’d suggested meeting at the lighthouse, she didn’t think they’d actually climb it. But Andy had insisted, saying it was the best view of Costa Luna you could find.

Stop thinking of it as a date, Carter cautioned herself. Think of it as hanging out with a new friend.

A new cute friend.

Andy held up the informational brochure they’d received when they entered the old lighthouse. “Two hundred fifty-five steps to be exact,” he said. “But face it, where else do you get the chance to see migrating whales?”

Andy wasn’t as cute as Carter had remembered him—he was cuter. Today he had on a pair of navy draw-cord shorts, a green T-shirt, and brown leather treads. His brown curls poked out from under a faded Red Sox baseball cap.

He had been right on time, which Carter liked. Keeping a girl waiting was not cool.

Neither is telling somebody you’re a member of a royal family when you aren’t, Carter thought for the zillionth time. To be fair, she hadn’t technically told that whopper of a lie—Natalie was the guilty party. But I didn’t do anything to correct it, she reminded herself. Instead, I went along with it.

Carter sighed inwardly. She would have to fess up to the truth. But until he brought it up . . . not yet.

She pulled out her camera and snapped a few pictures.

“Would you like one of you two together?” a woman wearing rhinestone sunglasses asked.

“Oh. Uh, sure,” Carter said, handing the woman her camera. Wait. She had to try to sound at least a little royal. She cleared her throat. “I mean, yes. That’s so very kind of you.”

Andy gave her a funny look before they turned and smiled for the picture. Did he suspect she was lying? Her stomach churned nervously. She’d have to do a better job of acting like a princess.

“You look so familiar,” the woman told Andy, tapping her chin with her finger. She gave Carter her camera. “Are you a student at Karate Kicks, by any chance?”

Andy shook his head and began to walk over to the stairwell. “Nope, not me.”

“Thank you,” Carter called out to the woman. She caught up with Andy. He seemed in a hurry to leave.

“I want to show you my Costa Luna,” he told her as they began their descent down the creaky circular staircase. “The real one most tourists never see.”

Carter took a careful step. Falling down the stairs would definitely not be royal. “That sounds . . . lovely.”

If someone had told Carter three days ago that she’d be riding on the back of a sleek black Vespa scooter, her arms around a cute boy, her hair blowing in the Costa Lunan breeze, she’d have said they were crazy.

Well, maybe not the hair-blowing-inthe-breeze part.
